MA 間
The Aesthetic of In-between Space-Time
The word Ma means “an ‘interval’ between two (or more) spatial or temporal things and events… It carries meanings such as gap in space or time.”
A room is called Ma, for example, as it refers to the space between the walls; a rest in music is also Ma as the pause between the notes or sounds.
By extension, Ma also mean “among” thus adding a relational meaning.
Loss is also Ma, in the sense that what has become intangible is just as present in memory.
Ma is double vision, or the constant awareness of at least two coexistent and interconnected spaces. Experiencing Ma is sensing the movement between potentialities, being on the brink of transformation.
Ma is the aesthetic of the Border, the experience of being at the crossroads. The location of this position is not as important as the intersections that happen at the crossroads. It is an insider-outsider position.
The constant shift between the in and out forces one to question binaries. It reminds us that there are multiple visions and realities all collapsed into one world, simultaneously.
