WUN

…Let’s give ourselves a curtain of protection so we can rest behind the scene. A neutral zone to lick our wounds, to reflect in the mirror and to acknowledge the guilt that prevents us from seeing our true face, from seeing our true bodies…

My experiences at empower Foundation and at the Women Exchange  meetings for women from Burma  inspired the text “WUN”.  The silk hanging, printed and hand painted, combines drawings and text in Thai, Burmese and English.

W.U.N was exhibited at the Asia-pacific Sex Workers Conference organized by Empower Foundation in Bangkok in 1999 and followed by a series of art workshops with migrant and refugees women along the Thai Burma Border.

Materials: Hand painted inks, silk-screen prints on silk. Dimensions: 115x178cm

THE RED TENT/

TRUTH OR LIES

This work was a collaboration structured in two parts: the Red Tent (Estelle Cohenny) and Truth or Lies (Susan Morgan). This interactive art project was part of the  2003 Mok Muan  Chiang Mai Social Installation.

The Red Tent explored how women experience public spaces.

The tent was opened to all women, and children. Migrant women living in Chiang Mai were invited to participate.

Inside the tent women picked word cards in Thai and English. Each person explored responses to the word written with the artist and other participants to create a personal Tarot card. These cards were then placed on a large printed fabric to mapping the landscape of women’s experiences. Participants were free to stay in the tent as long as they wished.

Within the tent, there were cloaks of various colours covering the whole body. Women could put a cloak on and to go out of the tent into the public space to interact with others. They then were invited to sit down in front on a video camera in a closed room in order to share their experience Truth or Lies.

Materials: fabric, bamboo, table, word cards (Thai & Engl.), cushions, paper clay, bells, sticks, cloth cloaks, video camera, TV screen. Dimensions: 5mx 3m.
